Challenges in Aviation eFuels: Insights from FGA and EU Discussions

FGA was invited the European Parliament 🇪🇺 Today Fly Green Alliance (FGA) – travel & transport attended the eFuel Alliance , Honeywell Technologies and European Commission MEP meeting which was convened at European Parliament to gain feedback on key topics for non fossil fuels for aviation (efuels). Points raised:

🇪🇺Demand still being very much discussed but as 🗣️FGA has seen this aspect is still funded less in grants and programs and can not rely alone on mandates and airline uptake
🇪🇺Regulartory certainty required absolutely – 🗣️ no change to mandate, 🗣️ a message from investors last week at a SAF conference and all groups in 🇬🇧🇪🇺
🇪🇺Simplification of policy is being discussed but it doesn’t mean repeal we were told
🗣️Additionality softening (please) due to the impossibility of matching renewable electricity project developments to new SAF developments an eFuel Alliance and Renewable Transport Fuel Association request also
🇪🇺Integrity of ReFuel EU SAF production mandate, without penalty steadfastness it isn’t a deal for banks who will hold off on investing, the same in the UK as Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom request a call for evidence which again isn’t a repeal, it is a review to assess pipeline and if the mechanisms are working
🇬🇧 UK discussing the HPBM, hydrogen business model because without home grown low Carbon hydrogen eSAF projects will be sourced from outside the EU so isn’t truly developing energy security/resilience as intended
🇪🇺Extension to ETS and having ETS fund plough back into SAF market development, how feasible is this? What steps need to be administered?
🇬🇧DfT is making a levy on fuel suppliers (oil & gas) is the European Commission ?
🇪🇺Damien Meadows frequently bringing attention to the SAF allocation fund which can be leveraged by airlines but isn’t being stacked by SAF producers and currently does not count towards meeting final investment decision for producers, can this evolve?
